City of Freetown

Climate change is already resulting in rising temperatures and even more so in Freetown as it experiences the urban heat island effect. The urban heat island (UHI) impact shows a higher air and land surface temperature (LST) in urban regions in contrast with the encompassing rural area.

As the Climate Action Africa Requesting Organization, the City of Freetown and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr  will oversee the CAA TE initiative though Eugenia Kargbo, Freetown’s Chief Heat Officer will serve as the lead city contact and manage the overall work. The City of Freetown will also provide insights into local context, shares best practices, and facilitates collaboration with other cities.

City Vision: Freetown increases its climate resilience to heat impacts, becoming a more livable, cool and sustainable city for its people. Learn more here.
